"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." — Albert Schweitzer
Emily roams through the hustle and bustle of the city in the heart of the metropolis in the morning. The alarm was only on for two seconds before she got out of bed, sticking her head under a cloud of steam from the hot coffee through the open door, swooping up lost pieces of paper with emails printing out, and frantically checking the colossal list of tasks done. As a dedicated marketing manager, her calendar was already overloaded with meetings and deadlines, not much time for things she once loved. However, deep within Emily, she felt that something was missing as this sense of happiness began to seem ridiculously out of reach.
One morning, amidst that chaos, Emily was brought to the article "Finding Happiness in a Hectic World." She took some time to read it. Something changed inside her that day. Perhaps she needed to take some care of herself. Inspired, she ventured on to begin the journey of happiness amidst that brisk life.
Now with a newfound resolve in her heart, Emily managed to carve out time for self-care. She started off with little stages such as fifteen minutes each dawn, where she would jog up and down around the corner in the park nearby. The freshness in the air and the rhythmic movement kept her woken up to a sense of peace. Day after day, she discovered the moments to be precious and allowed it to become something of a treasured ritual.
Mindfulness also snuck its way into her daily routine. During lunch, instead of scrolling through her phone, she put aside the time to breathe for five minutes and listen to the environment. She was surprised at how clear her busy brain was when tuning into the present moment, which eased her stress. At times, she closed her eyes and listened to the sounds around her: birds chirping and leaves rustling, creating a little sanctuary in the chaos of her day.
As Emily was striving for good well-being, she discovered that realistic goals are the most important. She began to break up her work projects into smaller tasks. She felt as if she was winning little victories when she finished each one because the completion of every little task lifted her up in order to carry on through life.
In the evenings, she made a conscious effort to connect with people. She called her friends and ordered cups of coffee for short messages or video calls. The laughter and the stories carried with them brightened her days, reminding her that nurturing connections means much to her. With every conversation, she is reminded that happiness blooms within connections.
One afternoon, while sipping tea at her favorite café, Emily began writing down things she was grateful for in a journal. She started with simple observations: a beautiful sunset, a supportive colleague, and even the taste of her favorite pastry. And gradually this practice of gratitude changed her outlook, made her see beauty in things, and appreciate small things that would otherwise not be noticed.
Many more sources of pleasure were added to the list with physical activity. Rather than exercise becoming a hassle, Emily found in it the excitement of movement. She joined a dance class at a nearby place and laughed and let go of the demands around work while listening to the music and rhythm and energy of the group.
Emily also learned to set her boundaries. "No" wasn't negative enough for some projects that Emily was involved in because they did not resonate with her personal values. Therefore, she carved in space for what mattered by being willing to say no to most projects. This was the key in reducing her stress levels and focusing on what she loved most about her work.
Years passed, and Emily kept making opportunity after opportunity to learn. She enrolled in an online photography course. She had always been interested in doing some photography as a hobby. Taking photos of moments in life, and now through her lens, sparked creativity with full satisfaction and filled other areas of life.
Emily reflected on her job and understood that she needed alignment of passion with work. She proposed a campaign with a cause close to her heart-sustainability. This project both energized her and gave her a sense of purpose so that it relates more to the work.
Despite how busy life had become, Emily never made herself forget to have fun. She organized game nights with friends during the week and ventured out for new restaurants during weekends, taking full advantage of every situation. Laughter colored her life once again, making her remember the proper components of happiness in life.
The months went by as well, and as such, Emily's journey started to change her perspective on life. Happiness is not something that was just miles ahead but became part of her daily being. By adopting self-care, mindfulness, and meaningful human relationships, she understood the chaos of her professional life but nurtured inner joy. In the end, Emily realized that happiness was not at all about slowing down life but how one could feel happy in the midst of all that was happening. Her story turned into a testifying testimony to the power of prioritizing well-being in a busy world, inspiring others to do likewise.
